Los Angeles (Saint Louis) Rams

2019

The avocado is the state fruit of California. It provided a delicious base for this week's recipe. The blue sour cream is a little on the light side, but other than that I was pretty happy with the way this came out. The Bucs ended up scoring 55 points in a win over the Rams, so it was a great football day.

Los Angeles Rams Avocado Tostada

Salsa

1 ear of corn

1 tomato

1 red chili pepper

1/2 can of black beans

1/2 red onion

cilantro

Chop it all up, toss with the juice from one lime, a splash of olive oil, and salt and pepper.

Guacamole

2 avocados

1 cup sour cream

garlic powder

chili flakes

Mash it all, top with the juice from one lime.

Beans

Saute the other half of the chopped red onion in a bit of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

Add the remaining 1/2 can of black beans, stir, mash.

Pickled onion

I saved a few pieces of onion and did a quick pickle with rice wine vinegar, a teaspoon of sugar, and a big pinch of salt.

Tostada

Top corn tostadas with the beans. (I popped them into the oven for a few minutes at 350.)

Layer guacamole, lettuce, pickled onions and cotija cheese. Serve with lime wedges and team-colored sour cream on the side.

2014

When the St. Louis Rams come to town, there are many delicious recipes to choose from. We chose to make the Gerber Sandwich. I had never heard of this open-faced gem before researching dishes from this city. This recipe calls for Provel Cheese, which is indigenous to this region. I could not find any in Florida, so I did my best impression with this recipe.

Top French bread with the following:

Garlic Butter

Ham

Provel

Paprika

Bake for 15 minutes at 350.

After that cardiac-inducing sandwich, we needed a vegetable-based side item. My favorite soda, Dr. Pepper, was introduced and found fame at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. We opted to try this Acorn Squash stuffed with Prunes and Dr. Pepper.

This day will also go down in history as "My First Squash Cooking Experience of Ever."

We washed it all down with a requisite Bud Light.

Here are some more great recipes from the Show-Me State. Enjoy them the next time you are hosting a party!
